my first SF earthquake [Sep. 6th, 2008|04:05 am]
loolix_rss

the most terrifying thing that has ever happened to me.

this is directly due to the local news people talking about how glad they are they don't have to deal with hurricanes. idiots.

I managed to get 3 seperate patches that fix the same func bug in 3 different ways within about 48 hours. Slightly odd considering the bug has been there for a year.

Looks like there is going to be plenty of rain here in the next few days, with Hurricane Hanna headed this way. I should be okay though, I'm stocked up on Strawberry Pop Tarts and beer.

I've been watching The Sensational Alex Harvey Band videos on youtube. It rains alot in Scotland right?

i am not sure this is exactly how it works, but kudos to bill frist for going there:

HIV/AIDS continues to hollow out entire generations of people at the prime of their lives. It's easy for people to lose hope.

And when they do, the vacuum is filled with desperation, instability, and - yes, the seeds of terrorism.

up until that line, i thought this was a repeat from last week's convention.

Your Issue Profile: 56% Obama, 44% McCain

Truth be told, you're not really satisfied with either of the candidates.

You could vote for either of them. You are the typical coveted swing voter.

You may want to narrow yourself down to a particular set of issues in order to pick your president.

Or start looking at third party candidates. One of them might suit you better.

the final countdown [Sep. 5th, 2008|06:48 am]
loolix_rss

it's been a tough two weeks, but now there's just one more night left, and then we can all vote tomorrow and not have to worry about another election for the next eight years. woo!

putting that motorized vehicle death number into some perspective, it's about one 9/11-level event, every month, every year. instead of this global war for automobiles, we really should be having hundreds of local wars against them.

and speaking of paying for wars, why is losing a child to a war patriotic, but paying taxes is the burden?

i better get started with the tv so i can get to bed before midnight.

Sometimes, I go temporarily insane [Sep. 4th, 2008|12:09 pm]

Sometimes, I find myself unemployed with very little on my plate besides job hunting, and at those times, I have "ideas".

The moral of this story is, if you get a cold that makes your head feel as though you've been snorting bleach, that ice is the answer. )

I think I may just putter off to Indiana this weekend, as I've still not found a job, and Katie's opera is going to be showing. How can I resist? I wish I could say I feel guilty about my blatant joblessness at the moment, but I really don't. I'm sure once I get around to analyzing my financial situation, I will feel differently.

They are in a state of denial about the biggest threat that faces this country.

total deaths in america from terrorst attacks in 2007: 0.

Total deaths in motor vehicle crashes in 2007 declined to 41,059.

Well, I'm back at work this week, even if it is pretty tiring. I might try and go home a little early today - I couldn't yesterday because I had a meeting from 4 - 5pm. Which I kind of flubbed anyways because I wasn't quite sure what was going on. But whatever, my boss knew it was my first day back. It'll get better. I just wish I wasn't so tired. Still, it's nice getting out of the house. Better get back to it!

PAUL SOLMAN: Every economist I know says that's exactly the wrong way to dampen energy use and, if it's ever even conceivable, make us energy independent.

NANCY PFOTENHAUER: But you now know an economist who advocates a gas tax holiday, because that would be me.

PAUL SOLMAN: The first thing we learn in economics is the supply-and-demand curves. And that is that, if the price is high, there's less demand and, if the price is low, there's more quantity demand.

NANCY PFOTENHAUER: So are you in favor of higher gas prices?

let me field this one, paul.

YES.

one more [Sep. 4th, 2008|06:12 am]

i can barely keep my eyes open as liberman winds up (i hope!) his speech, but there are some pretty awesome buttons on some of the delegates here tonight. two i've spotted:

Drill ANWR Now

Liberals pick on someone your own age

these were both worn by women; i don't really know what the last one means.

also there have been so many U-S-A chants i feel like i'm back at student night at the vault. i don't know if i can make it another night.

the skyscrapers in downtown SF make me sad. they are just huge monstrosities with the 2nd or 3rd floor repeated ad nauseum until the builders ran out of money. the older, shorter - often 10 floors or more - builds are almost all more beautiful, with interesting detail, and have revolutionary features like windows that actually open.

the end, really [Sep. 4th, 2008|06:12 am]

the rnc speeches are full of the same self-congratulatory we-know-bestisms that the chrome comic is so rife with. if that equates mozilla with the democrats, i don't want to think where opera (whose browser i use almost every other day on my phone) fits in that metaphor.

i wonder if i'm going to regret this post in the morning.

loolix_rss

while i was not-watching the non-convention last night, i couldn't help but notice all of the "country first" things all over the place. this morning, while i was running, i wondered... if that's what the republicans think, what's the democrats' message?

maybe it's people first.

people first, whether you're from this country or not.

people first, whether you're republican or democrat.

people first, whether you're here legally or not.

people first, whether you're poor or merely just middle class.

people first, whether you're religious or intelligent.

anyway, i'm not particularly looking forward to it, but i am going to make it through all three gut-stabbing hours tonight, mark my words. and that's a promise.

Holiday Weekend Wrapup [Sep. 1st, 2008|11:37 pm]

[mood | satisfied]

This weekend was a long (3 day) holiday weekend in the US and since classes start back up this week, I mostly spent the weekend away from a computer.

Started things out on Friday evening by (finally) getting around to getting a haircut and a few other errands. Then Kara and I grabbed dinner, came home and then caught up on some things recorded on the TiVo. Including the rest of the Daily Show's "live" coverage of the DNC. We were suitably amused.

Saturday morning, woke up to the surprise of wet roads. But since it wasn't actively raining, went out on the Quad ride anyway and had a quite nice ride. Came home, had a quick lunch, cleaned the bike and then we headed over to some friends' house for a bit. Played Race for the Galaxy for a while which was quite a bit of fun actually. Then, we headed to Za! for dinner with some other friends as well. Ended up seeing [info]pam and [info]spot as they were having dinner there as well.

Sunday, again woke up and went on the Quad ride. Kara also headed out. Another good ride and then spent a good chunk of time at the bike shop. Ended up helping a few people with various things and then eventually headed home. Then, we headed over to another friend's house for an end of summer barbeque. Matthew is also from NC (randomly -- he's one of the other people I ride with) and was previously a chef -- so, he made pulled pork. It was quite good, as was the sausage which he made. Lots of people, only some of whom I even had a chance to meet and to be honest ended up spending a lot of time talking with people that I already knew. Headed home before it got to be too terribly late and got some more good sleep.

This morning, I again woke up and headed down for a bike ride, though a significantly different route today than the normal Quad ride. We ended up with a group of six of us and set a good pace for the entire ride. Then, grocery shopping as we were really starting to run low on a lot of our sort of staple foods. And then, again, dinner with friends.

All in all, a very good weekend. And this week starts back the full grind of work and school. I'm currently thinking of just sitting in on the first day or two of a few of my options as far as classes are concerned so that I can really decide which seems like the best fit. And also, hopefully making some more Fedora on XO progress. But more on that tomorrow or so -- reading and then sleep time now.
